dental health during pregnancy

There is no question that pregnancy affects the entire body. The surge of hormones that occur during pregnancy often affect a woman’s oral health. Understanding the most common issues that occur during pregnancy can help you not only have a healthy pregnancy, but also maintain superior oral health while pregnant.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

When pregnant, progesterone is released, which encourages the growth of bacteria resulting in gingivitis. In most cases, you will begin to notice signs of this problem during the second month of your pregnancy. Symptoms include swollen or red gums or if the gums bleed easily while brushing. If the condition becomes worse, it is essential to call on dentists for a professional evaluation.

Enamel Erosion

Another common issue for pregnant women is enamel erosion. This is mainly seen in women who suffer from morning sickness that results in vomiting. In many cases, frequent vomiting can lead to the erosion of your teeth. If you do experience morning sickness, it is important not to brush directly after being sick. Since vomit is extremely acidic, it will leave your enamel susceptible to damage, even if you brush gently. Instead, just rinse out your mouth with water and then brush your teeth 20 to 30 minutes later.

Dry Mouth

In many cases, you may also experience dry mouth. If this occurs, it is important for you to drink plenty of water. This will work to flush away the bacteria that are growing in your mouth that would usually be removed by saliva.

If you are pregnant, it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene. It is also a good idea to consult with your dentist if you experience any of the above issues. While they may not seem like that big of a deal, pregnancy gingivitis, and compromised enamel can lead to serious issues if not treated in a timely manner. Your dentist may have some tips and advice regarding how to care for your mouth and teeth while pregnant.
