If you notice that your gums are bleeding, painful, or they’ve pulled away from your teeth, you may need gum disease treatment or periodontal therapy. Gum disease, also commonly caused gingivitis or, in its more advanced stages, periodontitis, can endanger the health of your teeth. However there are solutions and treatment options to correct and heal gingivitis and gum disease.
If your gums are hurting, bleeding, or feel otherwise uncomfortable, this is a sure sign that it’s time to get checked for gingivitis or periodontitis. You might also notice your gums pulling away from your teeth or receding. This can expose the softer tissues of the teeth and cause sensitivity and pain. As bacteria multiply and produce acids on the gums and in the spaces between teeth, they will weaken the gums, which can cause them to bleed, especially while flossing. If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to get your gums checked for gingivitis or periodontitis.
If your gums are causing you discomfort, there are solutions. Schedule an Appointment today or call 702-388-8888 to learn more!

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth, and it is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease or perio disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. Gingivitis (see below) is the earliest form of gum disease, and the first thing that you’ll notice if you’re experiencing this condition.
A study by the CDC showed that over 47% of adults in America have mild, moderate or severe gum disease, also called periodontal disease. Mild forms of gum disease, also called gingivitis, can be reversed with good dental hygiene and regular cleaning by a dentist. However, more advanced forms of gum disease require more extensive treatments to resolve. In these cases, the plaque built up between and underneath the gums must be removed, which can be done through procedures like scaling and root planing.
Gingivitis is a type of gum disease that appears early. At this stage, it’s still possible to treat gingivitis without serious interventions. By brushing and flossing regularly, you can fight bacteria, and restore the strength and health of your gums. However, if gingivitis isn’t treated, it can advance into perio disease, which is only treatable by a dentist.
Gum disease starts when bacteria grow and multiply on the gums. This can then advance into periodontal disease or periodontitis when the bacterial infection spreads below the gumline. This leads to the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums, where bacteria thrive.
Early gum disease, also known as gingivitis, and late gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, have similar signs and symptoms, but there are some important differences.
Gingivitis occurs first and it is generally easy to detect. You may notice that your gums are more red than pink, and they might be slightly puffy. When you floss, you’ll notice that your gums bleed. If you don’t floss at all, or don’t floss regularly, bacteria build up in the spaces between your teeth and around your gums, and cause irritation.
Periodontal disease or periodontitis develops when gingivitis gets worse and the bacteria spread below the gumline. The gums get more irritated, and bacteria cause more damage. The gums become redder and more irritated, and they’ll start to pull away from the teeth. You might also notice persistent bad breath or, if the infection is advanced, you might notice other signs like pus or a bad taste in your mouth.
Gum disease is common in Las Vegas and in Nevada in general, for many reasons. Las Vegas is a busy city, and many people may find it difficult to make time for their teeth, whether that means keeping up with a dental routine or visiting the dentist regularly.
For many, regular dental visits might be out of their budget as well. Only about 60% of Nevada residents report visiting their dentist at least annually. Not seeing your dentist regularly can cause many dental health problems to worsen over time, starting with tooth decay and gum disease. Nevada’s youth also tend to have more cavities than the national average, and this could be due to household resources.
Finally, Las Vegas in particular can encourage habits that can be bad for your teeth and gums, like smoking. Bad habits may form more easily in “Sin City,” but regularly visiting your dentist can help you fight gum disease and keep your teeth healthy.
Yes. When gum disease progresses, it can damage the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Over time, this can lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are the best ways to prevent long-term damage.
Bleeding gums are often an early sign of gingivitis and should not be ignored. The best first step is to schedule a professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and bacteria that brushing alone can’t reach. At home, improving your brushing technique, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help reduce inflammation. If bleeding persists, a deeper treatment, such as scaling and root planing, may be necessary.
Costs vary depending on the severity of the condition and the type of treatment required. Mild gingivitis may only require a standard cleaning, while more advanced periodontal disease may need deep cleaning, laser therapy, or ongoing maintenance visits. During your consultation, we provide a personalized treatment plan and a clear cost estimate, as well as information about insurance coverage and financing options.
Gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease, is usually reversible with professional cleanings and good oral hygiene. However, once gum disease progresses to periodontitis, the bone and tissue loss cannot be reversed. Treatment can stop the infection, manage symptoms, and prevent further damage, but early intervention is the key to avoiding permanent issues.
Research shows there is a connection between gum inflammation and an increased risk of cardiovascular problems. While gum disease doesn’t directly cause heart disease, chronic oral infection can contribute to inflammation throughout the body. Maintaining healthy gums is one way to support your overall health.
Yes, diabetes and gum disease are related. Diabetes can make it harder for the body to fight infection, making gum disease more likely and often more severe. In turn, untreated gum disease may make blood sugar levels more difficult to control. Effective periodontal care is especially important for patients with diabetes to protect both oral and systemic health.
