The Benefits of a Water Flosser
Although many people brush their teeth thoroughly twice a day, half of adults in the United States have gum disease. Dentists and orthodontists in Las Vegas instruct their patients to floss every day, but many people don’t because flossing with string floss is time-consuming and difficult. As an alternative, water flossing is an easier method of removing plaque and food deposits and reducing bacteria between your teeth and under your gums. Water flossers come with different attachments for varying levels of water pressure and have several oral health benefits.
Traditional floss is great for cleaning plaque and bacteria from between teeth, but it doesn’t reach far below the gum line and into the pockets. On average, string floss reaches to about 3 millimeters. Water flossers, however, can penetrate under the gums and into the pockets where even more plaque and bacteria are hiding. Certain attachments reach deeper than others, and this depth corresponds with stronger water pressure. On average, a water flosser can reach up to 6 millimeters, but some attachments can reach further than 7 millimeters.
Braces and Implants
If you have braces or implants, flossing with traditional floss could be even more time-consuming and difficult. A water flosser with an orthodontic tip, however, is safe to use around them and could sooth any irritated tissue that has developed around them. It can also reduce the risk of infection, which could lead to a life-threatening septic infection. You may achieve the best results when you clean the braces or implants at least twice day.
Periodontal Infection and Inflammation
One of the biggest benefits of a water flosser is that its pulsating action expels subgingival bacteria from the pockets in your gums. This helps you actively participate in maintaining the reduction of bacteria that you achieve at your dentist or orthodontist. Additionally, water flossers reduce gingivitis and bleeding compared to not using one. Research shows that both brushing and water flossing remove plaque, but only using a water flosser reduces inflammation. Water flossers are particularly useful if you have diabetes, which puts you at a higher risk of severe inflammation and gum disease.
