Three Things to Do When a Dental Filling Falls Out

When an old amalgam or composite dental filling falls out of a tooth, you might be upset and wondering what to do until your dentist can fix it. This kind of dental emergency requires care within 24 hours so that the tooth can be restored and no additional damage takes place. The missing filling may create a spot can also be painful and sensitive, which is why you should schedule a visit with your dentist as quickly as possible.

Call Your Dentist

The first step you should take is to call your dentist. Even if it is 10 p.m. on the Saturday of a holiday weekend, your dentist should have an emergency contact service available to assist you. In many cases, your dentist will be able to arrange for you to be seen, sometimes even on a weekend or a holiday. Your dentist can also advise you about whether or not you should seek emergency room care. The dentist can also call in a prescription if you need one. If you are in extreme pain, emergency dentists may be able to see you after hours on the same day.

Dental Cement

Many pharmacies cell an over the counter dental cement product. You can apply some of this to the spot where your dental filling was. Some dentists may recommend chewing a piece of sugarless gum and sticking it into the tooth. This helps prevent air, sugars and food particles from getting inside the damaged area.

Reattach the Filling

If the filling came out in one single piece, you might be able to reattach it temporarily with the dental cement purchased at a pharmacy. This may be enough to keep you comfortable until an emergency dentist can perform a permanent repair on your tooth. You should not try to repair the filling if it cracked or fell apart into many pieces.
