How to Avoid Tooth Decay and Cavities

Keeping your teeth healthy is essential to both your oral health and overall health, as tooth decay and other oral health problems can lead to myriad problems throughout the body.

Mouths become filled with bacteria every day, due to what you eat and drink. If you do not keep your teeth cleaned properly, tooth decay will invariably occur. Make sure to brush and floss at least twice per day, especially after meals. When you eat, acids are created that strip away the enamel on your teeth, which is why cleaning your teeth soon after you eat is so important. Limit any snacks between meals, and stay away from eating sugary foods or drinking sugary beverages on a regular basis. Ask your dentist about dental sealants, which helps with cavity prevention.

Reversing the Onset of Tooth Decay

While tooth decay is difficult to mitigate once it has begun, there are certain techniques you can use to somewhat reverse the onset of the problem. Fluoride is a type of mineral that is designed to prevent many of the issues that create tooth decay, and can even reverse its effects. Fluoride will prevent the loss of tooth enamel and actually replace any of the lost minerals that were necessary for the health of enamel. This substance drastically reduces the amount of acid created by bacteria. Fluoridated water is available, as is toothpaste that contains the substance. Your dentist may also have fluoride gel, tablets or mouth rinse that you can use as well.

Getting a Professional Teeth Cleaning

Even with regular brushing and flossing, it is impossible to eliminate all bacteria yourself. As such, it is essential that you receive regular cleanings and examinations by your dentist. This will remove any hardened plaque and identify if you are suffering from tooth decay. Do not forget to visit your dentist often. It is even possible to visit a dentist without insurance, so do not hesitate to have your teeth checked regularly.
