When it comes to tooth decay and gingivitis, proper prevention starts with daily care. The staple of all oral care is the toothbrush. Unfortunately, many people don’t take choosing a toothbrush very seriously. Avoiding emergency dentists all starts with choosing the right toothbrush. Here are some tips that you can use to make sure you get a toothbrush that you can count on.

Don’t Skimp on an Electric Toothbrush

One of the biggest choices you have to make is whether to get an electric or manual toothbrush. While it’s easy to write electric toothbrushes off as being too expensive, you get what you pay for. Electric toothbrushes do a much better job of stimulating blood flow to the gums. Studies also show that people who use mechanical toothbrushes tend to brush their teeth for longer, which helps prevent cavities.

Choosing the Correct Size

When it comes to choosing a toothbrush, bigger isn’t always better. You need to choose a toothbrush that is easy to hold in your hand. The National Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth for at least two minutes. If it’s uncomfortable to hold your toothbrush for that long, you may have the wrong size. You also want to choose a toothbrush that can easily reach every tooth inside of your mouth. A toothbrush that prevents this often leads to more dental problems than it solves.

Pay Attention to the Bristles

Lastly, you need to pay attention to the bristles. The bristles on a toothbrush typically fall into one of these firmness categories: extra soft, soft, medium and hard. Dentists usually recommend extra soft and soft bristles for people with sensitive gums. Medium bristles are perfect for people who prefer the bristles to more firm. In general, it’s best to stay away from hard bristles because they can damage the enamel on your teeth. It’s a misconception that harder bristles clean your teeth better.
